HOUSEHOLD ESSENTIALS 5-Line Retractable Clothesline embraces the feel of the beautiful outdoors for your laundry. Benefiting from Nature's energy, clothes and linens dry naturally on a massive 170 ft of line space.  This 5-line system extends to 34' and releases easily for smooth retraction into a protective aluminum case that keeps the line dry and clean.  A tightening knob keeps lines taut and tangle free.  Its lightweight and heavy-duty construction make this full size retractable line perfect for outdoor or indoor use. Mount it on a wall outdoors, in the garage or basement, or on the porch.  Use the 3-Piece Post Assembly (#42-0, sold separately) if another place to mount it isn't handy!  Be environmentally and economically intentional and delight in the freshness of line-dried laundry.  Go on—make Grandma proud.

How to Tighten Lines

There are 2 knobs on the sides of the case. Tighten the lines with knob that looks like a gear (knob B), and then turn the smooth knob on the other side of the case (knob A) to lock the lines. If just one line is off, you can remove the cover on the handle (pop off the end cap and the cover slides off) and retie lines one at a time (just make sure it is retied the same way it was tied the first time).

There will be some sag in clotheslines always. They should never be so tight that there is no give. We do recommend installing the unit 6 feet high to account for dip. There are also things likes clothesline props, which are used with many free standing models to help hold up longer lines.

Set Up Options

The 15-7 has 2 set-up options.  Which you choose, and how your space is laid out, will decide if you need to purchase the #42-0 Assembly Pole in addition to the retractable dryer.

Option 1: Wallmount Dryer and Receiver Bracket

Mount the dryer and the receiver bracket to opposite flat surfaces, i.e., walls.  Just make sure the wall materials are strong enough to support the weight of the dryer, lines, and wet clothes!  Visit your local hardware store to find the appropriate hardware (bolts, screws, etc.) for your mounting surface.

Common installations: Basements, Laundry rooms, Porch

Option 2: Combination Wallmount Dryer and Free-Standing Receiver Bracket

When a second wall isn't available, the #42-0 assembly pole (sold separately from the dryer or with the #157420 set) can be used to anchor the receiving bracket.  Again, the main unit should be mounted to a strong wall or strong wooden post (as in a sturdy deck railing). The assembly post is only used to mount the receiving bracket, which is included in the #15-7.

Common Installations: Outdoors, Decks, Patios, Yards

Locking knob broke after a couple of uses. Tried to put clamp on just doesn't work.

Hi Jr, I am sorry for your experience. That is frustrating and shouldn't happen. I'd like to help. I've looked, and it doesn't appear that you ordered your dryer directly from us (via our website). If you'd contact Customer Service at 1-800-922-5524, we'd like to see what we can do for you. Thank you for contacting us and leaving a review.

I bought mine from Fred Meyers in Washington State 24 years ago when we moved into our house. I use it all summer long. It still works great, just a little loose on the lines. I am looking at a new one or a way to tighten each line separately.

Hi Chriss. I'm delighted your retractable dryer is still going so strong! Here's how to tighten those lines individually--just in case there's a chance to get even more life out it! (1) Extend your clothesline and anchor it like you would if you were going to use it, with the lines tightened by the tightening knob (on the end of the unit) and locked into place. (2) Next, remove one of the square plastic caps off the end of the handle (the part you pull out) and slide the black-colored strip out of the handle through the endcap opening. This will probably take two hands. (3) Untie the line(s) you want to tighten, leaving the line coming through the center hole. (4) Pass the line out (from inside the handle toward the dryer) the lower left hole, leaving a small loop inside the handle (to tie the line off later). (5) Return the line through the upper right hole (the loop should cross above the center hold). (6) Pull the end of the line through the loop you left inside during step 4 and tighten the line, tying it off. I hope this helps and thanks for the review!
  • Not as good as orignal model 14 years ago

Gave this new model to my brother in law after his original retractable clothesline broke after 14 years of use. Was happy to find this [through] Amazon and then was shipped from your company. He just informed me that the new one has broken and its not only 1 year old. He only uses in in spring and summer so it hasn't been used very much. There is a plastic part, which used to be metal, that has broken and he can't fix. Do you have parts for replacement and how do we order them from you?

    HHE Reply:
Hi Jan. Thank you for contacting us. We were sorry to hear about the broken piece on the dryer and your brother's disappointment. We're glad to have been able to send out a full replacement to him.
